Tim and Stacy talk with Marylee Nunley and Larry Schaer of Retreat and Refresh Stroke Camp. About two years after Marylee’s husband’s stroke, She read an article about a camp for stroke survivors who had aphasia. After reading that story, She knew that She was meant to pursue the dream of having a similar camp. Her family has had a lifelong love of camping so planning and executing the camp wasn’t particularly frightening. With the help and support of our local Central Illinois Stroke Council, American Heart Association, American Stroke Association, Caterpillar Foundation, Illinois Neurological Institute, and especially Dr. David Wang, we were able to realize our dream. The first camp was held in September of 2004. Through the years, we have met more and more people through the Retreat and Refresh Stroke Camps. As a result of our success, the dream to hold a single camp in Illinois has now grown to a national network of stroke camps for stroke survivors, caregivers, and family members.
